You want to do it with yourself?

Seriously, you need an unattended install disk and also make sure that you have the drivers on hand for the machine. When you have the unatended cd or floppy just boot the machine and let it to its thing. You should be at the desktop when all is said and done.

To post 1, the only program that I know that will do what you want is NLite.
Its freeware, requires .net v2.0, and will integrate drivers, service packs, product key, other info, so that all you've gotta do is have a sighted person help you out with partitioning the hard drive, hth.

The answer file will also allow you to drop and recreate the partition for a drive, so you don't need sighted help at all.

it's funny this should come up. i'm trying to find a bargain on an xp disc witch i think i have found. my recommendation to you is if you can experiment with a machine witch you do not use often. as for myself, i have my desktop witch i intend to play with this. nlite seems to work quite well. i will let you know. i'm just looking for a great bargain on an xp home disc. prob amazon or newegg will have one.

On this site,
http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/
You'll find lots of good articles on different ways to make your own unattended xp cd. I'm using my own, which installs lots of programs like skype, msn etc along with windows so I don't have to install them later. this website shows you how to do this and you don't need to use inaccessible programs like NLite

I second post 11, as thats where I learned how to do it. One thing I would say though is that its worth learning the keystrokes for the partition screen instead of automating it. For example, my first disk removed all the partitions, created 1 big one and did an install - this disk was fully unattended. However, the time came to format a machine with 2 harddrives in - in this situation it would have formatted both the drives which would have lost me about 80 gigs of no ware else type data. I created another cd that was fully automated other than the partition screen so I could have more control as to what was and wasn't formatted. Fyi, the following key sequence will deleet the first partition, create a partition on the unpartitioned space and perform a quick format using ntfs
d
enter
l
enter
up arro twice
enter
Bit of a pain but its worth it in the long run imo.

One should never format a system partition via quick ntfs
I suppose for data it may be acceptable, but residual residue might linger causing unexpected results down the road*shrug*.
Waiting that much longer will give you a cleaner partition.
The problem with unattended installation occurs when one wishes to install third party drivers via f6, since the floppy is currently occupied. Anyone knows a means of doing such without slip streaming it? 2nd floppy would be ignored by xp as it seeks for A:. shrug, perhaps there just is no means.

Meh fair enough - I always do full formats after a drives had linux on it but never bothered to when its just the same os - guess thats why full is the default.
As far as drivers go, have a look at www.driverpacks.net - this solves the floppy sata drivers problem along with the hassle of finding other drivers.

For newer laptops I know this topic is dead but I'll put it here for reference perposoes, that on newer compaqs, one must disable native sata support in the bios in order for xp to even see the hard disk.

ah ok. got you. i can just have one pc with the article pulled up and read it as i reformat it. i am getting a new asus eeepc with xp on it so my laptop will turn in to the machine i play with :).

Post 17 by Austin (the magic fan!) on Sunday, 14-Sep-2008 15:33:01

let me give you all one good peace of advice. if floppies are any good anymore, they make the best way to format xp by yourself. just make an answer file and you can use your xp cd. no more fucking with nlite. plus it works real well. and floppy drives are sooo cheap these days.

Post 18 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Sunday, 14-Sep-2008 17:03:04

Think i'll give that post 11 URL a look. Thanks for it. I've gotta get this second hard drive reformatted, because it must have remnants of ubuntu on it, and is not showing up in my computer folder. I'd like to get it to show up, so i can put my ftp and stream stuff on it. Any ideas on how I could go about doing this?

Post 19 by jeffreyshockley (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Wednesday, 17-Sep-2008 17:48:10

Check if it's in Device Manager. If so, I think there's a way you can do it there.

Post 20 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Wednesday, 17-Sep-2008 18:28:13

I deleted it from computer management, the partition, and that logical drive. Still, its not showing up, I think I have to put in my xp cd and reformat it with windows.

Or, try takin off the case, remove the cable to it, and put them back and see what ahpins. who know, that might work.

Post 22 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Thursday, 18-Sep-2008 17:42:58

It shows up in disk management so i don't think that is the problem.

Post 23 by b3n (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Thursday, 18-Sep-2008 18:38:34

@mm91:
1: Google for and download hdd low level format tool - its free.
2: Run it, making sure that you select the correct drive; control tab to low level format and perform the low level format; time depends on the size of the drive.
3: Go to disk management and create a partition out of the unalicated space that you'll find.
There you have it.
In regards to using floppies to do unattended, its not needed, the sif file can just be placed in the /i386 folder on the cd.

You can, but without enlite, you'll have a hard job, unless you've got sight and can see all the questions and stuff that comes up on the screen.

Post 26 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Friday, 19-Sep-2008 18:44:39

The only problem is, i use tool, and it went fine. Bu its not showing up in disk management now. All that is their is c and f my jmp drive. Do i have to insert a windows CD, and tell it to install windows on the second hard drive?

Post 27 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Friday, 19-Sep-2008 20:33:02

Ok, problem fixed. Heres what i did.
Ran the HDD tool, and reformatted the mackster.
Next, when into disk management, and used the jaws cursor to get down a bit, until you hear unallacated free space. Move over to it, and right click it, and select new partition. Follow the wizard through, and its back and working again. Thanks for the tool, Its awesome.
